Goth Gift Guide: Vamplets

What do you buy new parents or the young little bloodsucker in your life?  I came across a couple at the NY Comic Con with the most adorable booth.  Vamplets are cute vampire dolls you can adopt.  Cuddly with a bite, they have names like Evilyn Nocturna and Burton Creepson jr.  They have wicked little accessories like Disappearing baby bottles (of blood).  

The collection was founded by an artist named G-ra who turned it into a family affair.  The Vamplets team has been gathering fans all over at toy fairs, Comic-cons on both coasts, Dragon-cons and a bunch of other fun events.

Mattel's Dolls of Monster High

Did you buy the cutesy Goth/Punk Barbie last year?  Are you looking for something edgier and fashion forward?  Mega toy brand Mattel finally recognized that young fashionistas want darker, sleeker styles.

A new collection of dolls was released this summer called Monster High.  The story is that these chic horror chicks are the teen descendants from famous monster classics.  The dolls go by the names like Frankie Stein, Clawdeen Wolf and Draculaura.

Mattel is putting its full weight behind promoting these ladies.  There are music videos, a cartoon series and an upcoming full length feature from Universal Studios.  Their website is a lot of fun.  You can play games, register for school and unlock promotional codes for goodies.

Beyond The Brambles - Exhibit by Jade Kuei

If you are in New York or New Jersey, check out artist Jade Kuei's new exhibit at the Kanibal boutique. She was previously profiled for her creepy cute jewelry collection, and has not graced us with a wonderful collection of paintings.

What nightmares can you encounter when you get lost in the woods? The exhibit examines the monsters that a child imagines he would encounter... What I love about Jade's work is that the child in her art are never victims. The child always seem to befriend or conquer the phantoms he encounters.

The art show runs until August 23rd, 2010. Can't make it to the exhibit? You can always peruse her Etsy shop or view her online portfolio.

Bat's Day at DisneyLand

Are you firmly entrenched in the dark side, but need some family friendly ideas for your next inter-generational vacation? Head for the big mouse... The weekend of April 30th, 2010 - May 2nd, 2010, dress in your Goth or spooky finest and enjoy Bat's Day at Disneyland.

You can start with a banquet in a haunted ballroom, shop for collectibles and fashion at the Black Market, party at the Ghoulish Gala and of course, enjoy Disneyland. There are plenty of other events, bands and activities planned throughout the weekend, so if sunshine isn't your thing, you have nothing to worry about. Plan your weekend now!

Baby Noir - Dark Chic for the Urban Baby

Not a pastels kind of Mom? Do duckies and teddy bears make you ill? Do you need your little one to be dressed as chic and cosmopolitan as yourself? New mother Kazuki Kozuru was a New York fashion designer for some of the top houses in the industry. When her daughter was born, she naturally wanted to dress her in the same, stylish aesthetic that she herself subscribed to. However, after shopping the market, she realized that baby clothes in the stores did not follow suit.

The popular new parent book states, "Urban Babies Wear Black". If that's true, where were they all shopping?

Looking to correct a glaring glitch in the market, Kazuki started a small, home-grown baby collection from scratch. The stylish onesies have Victorian-inspired ruffles down the front and tees have fabulous screen-printed motifs (my favorite is the warrior-like sword-wielding princess). She even has accessories, like the black rose petal hat modeled above.

Gothettes In Training: Coraline

Ah, what a spooky, bittersweet flick to look forward to this Friday. Based on the Neil Gaiman book and directed by Nightmare B4 Christmas director Henry Selick, the film is, if nothing else a wonderful piece of art. With mostly everything crafted by hand (!) the movie tells the tale of a young girl who finds a fantasy/nightmare alternate reality behind a secret door. View the trailer.
